Martin Hynes is former President of the European Science Foundation, for which he was previously Chief Executive.
Prior to this Strasbourg move, he was Director of The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) and in this role he implemented a number of innovative national funding schemes with a special focus on early career researchers. He devised incentives for engaging young researchers with enterprise across public and private sectors and won significant Marie-Curie co-funding for these programmes.
He has been fortunate to codesign significant science policy initiatives supporting research in the ICT and biotechnology sectors. He also edited the first National Framework of Research Needs in Ireland and contributed to the Technology Foresight initiative that laid the ground work for the establishment of Science Foundation Ireland.
With training in Governance, Martin has served on several Boards including that of the Irish University Quality Board, Digital Enterprise Research Institute as well as those of private companies. He contributed as a member of the Foundation Board of the Royal Dublin Society (RDS).
An Engineering and MBA Graduate, he is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland.
