I am a pharmacist with a doctoral degree in pharmacology (UCT) and postdoctoral experience in pharmaceutical biology (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium). I was professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of the Western Cape (until 2009) and thereafter became a consultant to the National Department of Health and the Medicines Control Council/South African Health Products Regulatory Authority. Currently I am a consultant for The World Health Organisation.
