Dr Dimitri Martinis

Dimitri is a development sociologist specialising in digital media, research and information and communications technologies (ICT). In the public sector he served as researcher for the Digital Broadcasting Advisory Body (DBAB) to advise on policy and the implementation of digital broadcasting in South Africa. He was key to the development and launch of the South African Film and TV Production incentive, and of film co-production treaties between South Africa and several countries.
In the corporate environment he was part of the top management team that launched South Africa’s first commercial free-to-air and Pay TV stations. He also played a part in the launch of commercial radio and community TV channels. His most recent projects was as part of the team of expert consultants on the Review Panel that produced the ‘Integrated ICT Policy for South Africa. He was lead consultant on a review of the regulatory environment for the launch of 5G in South Africa conducted for the European Union delegation to South Africa. He also served as researcher for the SA National Editors Forum inquiry into media ethics.
He is a graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) where he read for an MA in Sociology after completing his twin Honours degrees in Cultural and Media Studies and in Development Sociology. He serves as an external examiner for the Faculty of Humanities at Wits and runs a series of post-graduate master classes and training workshops for broadcasters and other media companies
