Butana Mboniswa holds a Masters of Science (M.Sc.) and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degrees. He has over 24 years working in the National System of Innovation (NSI) in South Africa including having worked as a Scientist at the African Explosives and Chemicals Industries (AECI) and a Technology Manager for Biosciences at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

He was the CEO of BioPAD from 2003-2007, a Biotechnology Regional Innovation Centre based in Gauteng Province. He later provided consulting services to the Technology Innovation Agency in 2010 where he oversaw the development of their Investment Framework.

He is currently the Director of Inqaba Biotechnical Industries (Pty) Ltd, a private genomics company based in Tshwane with subsidiaries and offices in Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Ghana.

He is the founder and owner of Sereko Technology and Innovation Advisors since 2007. Butana is an experienced executive with knowldege in technology and investment management, start-up financing and business development, seed funding and incubation.

He serves in several boards including the innovation hub, the GGDA Infrastructure, Trade and Investment Board Committee, Inqaba Biotec and Technology Innovation Agency.
