Prof Miller is an Associate Professor for Citizenship Studies at the Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs. She is also a Kundalini yogi. Her work emphasises the importance of self-governance movements such as food gardens, as a counter to the domination of large food corporations. She has published on topics such as food governance, labour and social movements, and women's leadership. Her doctorate which she obtained from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, US, was on African Labour, South African retail multinational and their post-Apartheid African expansion. She was the Director of the Institute for African Alternatives (SA), National Educator for SACCAWU (South African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union), a COSATU affiliate; an alternative executive member for Southern Africa, and the founder of the Women's Academic Solidarity Association at Rhodes University.
