Deborah Minors is a strategic and experienced science and research communicator in the higher education sector and a qualified journalist. She is a Senior Communications Officer at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (Wits). She is part of the team responsible for communicating the research of Wits scientists to multiple publics via strategic communication and media relations. Her personal interest is health sciences communication. Most of her career, which began in 1995, has been in strategic communications, public relations and media, and predominantly in the healthcare, media, and education sectors. Previous appointments included: Lecturing PR and Business Communication at a vocational college; production administration in broadcast media; editorial assistance in BTB magazines; agency consultancy PR, strategic communications and public affairs; writing funding proposals and annual/project reports for a literacy and teacher-training NGO; alumni communications, and since 2016, science and research communications at Wits University. In this capacity,  Deborah led the communications and media campaigns for the world's first living donor liver transplant from an HIV positive donor to her HIV negative child (2018), on behalf of the Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, and for SA and Africa's first COVID-19 vaccine trials (Oxford/AstraZeneca and Novavax), on behalf of Wits VIDA. She holds a Master's in Journalism and Media Studies from Wits University.
