Salvador Montiel Ortega is a full time researcher (CINVESTAV 3C) and professor in the Department of Human Ecology at the Center for Research and advanced Studies (CINVESTAV-IPN) Merida Unit, Mexico. Before joining CINVESTAV-IPN in June 2000, Salvador was a research assistant in projects on ecology and mammals, bird and traditional uses of fauna in different tropical areas of Mexico. From 1995 to 1999, as part of his doctoral activities, he carried out an ecological study on seed dynamics of the desert cactus Opuntia rastrera in the Chihuahuan desert. Bases on his interests and work experience in the past fifteen years, Salvador is developing projects on ecology, traditional uses and strategies of conservation in situ of wildlife under different scenarios in Southern Mexico (but see Laboratorio de Ecología y Conservación de la Biodiversidad-LAECBIO). Salvador is a biologist by training, with a PhD (ecology and natural resources management) from the Institute of Ecology of Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico.
