Felix K. Assah, MD, PhD

Dr Assah is a Senior Lecturer of epidemiology and public health at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of The University of Yaoundé I, and Deputy Director of the Health of Population in Transition Research Group, Yaoundé, Cameroon. He qualified in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of The University of Yaoundé I in Cameroon, and subsequently trained in Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Cambridge, UK. A 2005 Gates Cambridge Scholar, he has been a Wellcome Trust Training Fellow in Public Health and Tropical Medicine. His research interests are in the epidemiology of non-communicable diseases and their risk factors, focusing on understanding the upstream determinants and changing patterns of lifestyle risk factors (diet and physical activity) and also environmental factors (accidents, air pollution and climatic hazards) in populations undergoing transition (urbanization and westernization) and how these affect the patterns of diseases, with a view to contribute to primordial or primary prevention interventions. He has expertise in using objective measurement methods to assess the differences and changing patterns of physical activity in free-living populations. He is a member of the Cameroon Academy of Young Scientists, the Global Diet and Activity Research network, the African Physical Activity Network and the International Society for Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH) Low- and Middle-Income Research Council.
